NY Times has a fascinating interactive graphic for several swing states breaking down the 2000 election Bush/Gore votes by county.

You'd think that larger cities would all go Democrat but you'd be wrong. For the most part true but there are exceptions, like Cincinnati and Nashua.

Most rural votes go Bush.

Maybe breaking down states into electoral districts wouldn't be such a bad idea for Republicans, would mean that big cities can't override the suburbs and the rural parts of a state.

Of course then you'd get the gerrymandering problem, which at least presidental elections DON'T have. Probably the only problem they don't have.
