First of all, I do not support the federal government having very much of ANY of our money -- whether you are a Republican or a Democrat!

That said, adjusted for inflation the debt we had following WWII was significantly higher than the trillion dollar funny money we have today.

That trillion dollars 100 years ago works out to about $20 billion. A tidy sum. Much of this money is going down the hole of entitlement programs and the debt floated to fund them. For instance, all Social Security payments into the federal coffers are immediately spent. Know what's in Al Gore's "lockbox?" Debt. IOUs. Government bonds.

Stop focusing on Bush and look at the big picture: the entire federal government has been out of control for about 90 years. After they started collecting tax on all our incomes both Democrats AND Republicans started spending all OUR money like drunken sailors on leave.

As the late Senator Everett Dirkson (R, Illinois) once pointed out about federal spending, "A billion here, a billion there. . . the next thing you know you're talking about real money!"

Haha!
