Unfortunately you have parsed the word "concience" so sparingly that it has no practical application in the context of the current discussion on fanaticism.

The dictionary definition you proposed for Fanaticism seems to discount your entire position.

"fanaticism

\Fa*nat"i*cism\, n. [Cf. Fanatism.] Excessive enthusiasm, unreasoning zeal, or wild and extravagant notions, on any subject, especially religion; religious frenzy.

Here we see the term "unreasoning zeal" as an essential element in your definition. I would agree that it would be a mistake to parce the term "unreasoning zeal" from the definition as it applies directly to the context of our discussion.

The use of the word "conscience" in your post and mine has necessitated an internal logical and reasoned consideration of perspective....tending to lesson the likelihood of fanaticism IMO...not the core instigator of it.
