Gary,
When one decides to roll up or roll down, one would have to
evaluate wether or not the stock has the potential to move up or down.
Furthermore, in using this one has to keep in mind that not all stocks
are candidates for writing covered calls. And yes, with huge jumps in
price (both up and down) one could potentially gain less, but would have
to make a trade off based on risk.
