You have to make sure you have enough capacity to power all the appliances you want (a well sucks up a lot of power).
My understanding is anything with a motor sucks a lot of power on startup. Once the motor is up to speed, the draw drops.

Well pump, furnace blower fan, refrigerator/freezer compressor motor, etc.

I understand the standby generators that run on propane are programmed for a weekly cycle to power up to make sure everything is functioning properly.
