Polls show most people do support the public option. But most people do not understand it.

But ask people who have medicare if they want to give it up. I doubt you will find very many who say they would give it up! The Republicans voted 100% against medicare as I remember. So they were on the wrong side of that issue as well. And social security. History has shown social security and medicare are god sends to most old people. And I doubt anyone getting either would give it up.

As mentioned, we have the highest health care cost in the world and are 37th in health care. That statistic should cause alarm bells.

And no, actually the Republican's do not understand the social contract. In fact you use the Horatio Alger analogy below which does not square with the facts.

Let me explain. We know that the kids who get the most education are the kids who come from educated families. Obama's mother got him up at 5 to study each day. Educated people do that much more often than uneducated people.

So one's environment is a huge determining factor. Remember, it was illegal to teach slaves to read and then we had segregation (and inferior schools) until recently. So in the black community they start out way behind.

Slavery and segregation was our societies fault (Republicans refuse to acknowledge that) and put the black community way behind. So society has a responsibility to help the black community to catch up e.g. affirmative action.

The democrats understand the above concept cold and the Republicans have fought against it as long as I can remember and I am and old guy who was in involved in politics for 30 years.

>>I don't think there is a failure to understand. There is a difference of opinion of what this social contract is. Most people are glad to help their fellow humans that are in need. However there is personal responsibility that is part of the social contract. I should not be asked to bankroll those that chose not to educate themselves, threw away their lives partying or won't work when they can. After all our President is a black American that rose from little. Anything is possible but takes work and diligence. However those that have hit hard times not of their own making, yes most people are glad to help. There is also a difference in thought in what the govt role should be.
