Jim -

The term ATM is used to refer to both the defined ATM physical
interfaces (better referred to by more exact names like B-ISDN) and
in reference to the ATM transmission convergence layer (the carriage
of ATM cells over any physical media dependent (PMD) interface). I
think this is the cause of your confusion. ATM cells can (and are!)
used as the basis for transmission in many ADSL, VDSL, and cable modem
systems. The other popular transport mechanism being the IP packet.
Ericsson's system could very well utilize the carriage of ATM cells
over an ADSL link, although I do not know this for a fact.
