I share some of your optimism on how this will play out to benefit the service and server providers (meaning a greater proliferation of devices that can handle and display their output). However, I do beleive that the real visionary company here is Sony. There is and has been much debate as to if or maybe when the set top box is built into new TV's or multimedia home entertainment systems. Just as modems started as an external device, they ended up a standard feature on every computer.

Sony is not yet going that way for many reasons, although I expect 3 to 5 years from now that will not be the case. For the moment, they are excited about the porting capacity and the potential that everything from their camcorders and digital cameras to their various adudio and visual home entertainment equipment (including gaming systems) that will be available on both the GIC box and the SFA box.

They hope to move toward the USB type conectivity that is now becoming widely accepted in the PC industry with the allowance of WIN 98.

As the TV and PC merge, so will the various elements of the home entertainment system and even some more mundane household appliances and systems. Embedded processors will play a big part in this along with the major networking companies such as Cisco.
