Trump recruiting for the Senate 8 Don Surber by Don Surber
Bummed by being handicapped politically by a narrow 51-49 advantage in the Senate, President Trump is recruiting blue chip Republicans to run
No more Roy Moores.
And that means Trump is willing to back a RINO or two in the primaries. Winning matters. Ideological purity is for losers.
Ask Bill Kristol how that works.
"Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) is 'listening closely' to people who are encouraging him to reconsider his decision to retire from the Senate, according to an aide," the Daily Beast reported.
The aide, Micah Johnson, told the Daily Beast, "In recent days, people across Tennessee have reached out to Senator Corker with concerns about the outcome of this election because they believe it could determine control of the Senate and the future of our agenda. The senator has been encouraged to reconsider his decision and is listening closely."
Corker was a tough critic of Trump until the Fake News media turned on him after his tax cut vote. He got to walk a mile in Trump's shoes,
Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn is seeking the seat, which complicates matters.
Her spokeswoman did her no good when she told the Daily Beast, "Anyone who thinks Marsha Blackburn can't win a general election is just a plain sexist pig."
Meanwhile, in North Dakota (a Trump state), Republican Congressman Kevin Cramer may enter the Senate race after all. Trump needs him to defeat incumbent Democrat Heidi Heitkamp.
"Cramer, the state's lone House member and a close ally of President Donald Trump, has long been considered the blue-chip recruit for Republican. He announced in January that he wouldn't challenge Heitkamp, but White House officials, party leaders and Cramer's home-state supporters continued to pressure him to jump in," MSN reported.
Republicans want the lone Republican in the race to seek Cramer's seat in the House instead.
Trump is not a salesman, not a politician. He is hustling candidates to run for the Senate.
In West Virginia where I live, recruiting a viable candidate to try to knock off Joe Manchin is not a problem.
Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, Congressman Evan Jenkins, and coal magnate Don Blankenship want the Republican nomination. I will support any of them, but Morrisey is the giant killer, knocking off a five-term Democratic incumbent in his first run for office.
We will see how this plays out, but Trump is engaged.
He got his nose bloodied in Alabama. Lesson learned. |
