Tandem machine are reliable sez more about Tandem's technology
rather than Microsofts. However, they are still not as scalable
as Sun boxes because of inherent limitation of NT.

The next frontier in EDA application is job farming. That
is very larger server farms for applications such as placement
and route as well as architectural verification. Sun is targeting
that market very heavily.

Sun workstation is not going to go away. My guess is that
they will be making some announcemnents this quarter about new
products that will be competing against low end NT boxes.

CHUNG:

Solaris on X86 did not sell well because X86 was too slow. This is no longer the case.
The workstation market is going Intel Box. Spetra is the placement and Route tool from
Cadence Design. AS far as Server goes, NT is coming. Sun is not going away. Most
studies I've seen says they will co-exist in the foreseable future.

Reliability, Scalability, Usability, etc. will come. Tandem NT machine are scalable,
reliable. They will continue to close the gap until NT is as close to "NSK" machines.

Cheers
