The thing is that the entire industry was moving this direction without any push from government, and they were doing so at a reasonable pace that allowed for the technology and security issues to be paced with the scaling of the applications.

What we have now is a situation where the scale is going to be ramped much faster than standards and technologies are ready for.

It is how we get systems like Medicare. Today, Medicare has its payment system working, but the processes behind it are so bureaucratic the wheels are falling off.

In my state, as of today, a new physician who wants to start seeing Medicare patients will be from 8-10 months without his first payment from Medicare. After that, he'll get paid on schedule -- usually within 3-4 weeks of providing the service. But 8 months to get through the "enrollment" process? Is that really necessary? Well, it is if you have antiquated systems that nobody can work on, let alone fix.
