New High-Speed WAN Interfaces for Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router to
Deliver High-Performance Traffic Shaping Capabilities

GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 1999--Telecom'99-(Booth 1111)--Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced a partnership with Maker Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAKR - news) in the development of high-speed Wide Area Network (WAN) interfaces for Cabletron's award-winning SmartSwitch Router (SSR) family.

Under the partnership, Cabletron will utilize the Maker MXT4400 Traffic Stream processor (TSP), a programmable engine ideally suited for high-speed Internet services. The TSP Family will lower the cost of development for interfaces ranging from T3 to OC-48 speeds, and will provide advanced traffic management and internetworking services.

''The SmartSwitch Router is being deployed widely in Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks. The adoption of the MXT4400 further demonstrates Cabletron's commitment to deliver industry-leading solutions with features such as traffic shaping that enhance ISP's service delivery capabilities,'' said PG Menon, senior director of product marketing at Cabletron Systems.

The MXT4400 TSP delivers the performance of ASIC-based implementations and provides traffic shaping features that are critical for controlling traffic on the Internet. Cabletron's partnership with Maker Communications underscores its commitment to take a leadership position in the Internet aggregation market for multi-service routers.
