We tend to glorify youth... but, as a prominent American Jungian analyst James Hollis likes to say - in a sense, "The entire first half of life is one big mistake". Takes a long time for a person to mature.

You, Bill, always criticize Plato, but it was he who figured out about 2 1/2 thousand years ago that a man truly becomes his own person by the age of 50. Plato had a point - and even by 50 there are zero guarantees. It takes a long time to figure things out, and many people don't even bother.

Young are not all the same - but very often, to "belong" is more important to them than what exactly is it they aspire to belong to. You're right - frankly, it's a good thing they can't vote.
