Telecom Roundup: Speaking of the No. 1 PC maker, Compaq is making a brave foray into the world of telecommunications. Monday, the company launched a new division, Compaq Telecommunications, to provide services to telecom companies. The announcement was one of many at the Telecom '99 conference in Geneva, Switzerland. Cabletron (CS) announced a new router that could speed up Internet traffic and pit it against networking giant Cisco (CSCO) and the hot-to-trot Juniper Networks (JNPR). For its part, Juniper announced a $30 million distribution deal with telecom equipment maker Alcatel (ALA). Tuesday, Nortel Networks (NT) is expected to introduce a new high-speed optical networking system for communications companies and an equipment deal with Cable & Wireless (CWP).
