I think what Lehman is saying is that ICA (Independent Computer Architecture) is independent only on the client end of the client - server relationship. On the server end you must use Windows NT. Linux is growing fast on the client end, but even if they are using non MSFT products on that end, they still wind up with MSFT on the other end if they use ICA. The operating system and other software on the server end is the high profit line. I suspect customers are choosing Linux for the exact same reason they are choosing thin client - less problems, lower overall cost. When customers chose this solution, MSFT loses client Windows 98 revenues. The only way they can keep this from happening is to improve client operating systems. Half a loaf is better than none, which is what MSFT might get if customers go to Linux on the client and a regular fat client network with Unix on the server. Linux doesn't have enough support to be used by those who do lots of different tasks on computers, but those with more limited needs might find it desirable. The Lehman report reinforces my view that CTXS is good for MSFT in the real world as it exists now and in thee future, though MSFT is probably nostalgic for the good old days when there was no choice.
