As for communicating end-of-life issues I find addressing the patient as a unique individual is a lot more effective rather than using some questionable statistic that may or may not apply.

I should think there would be some variation among patients. Best I can tell, patients often look for statistics--percentage chance of various results, for example. I think that I would find it useful to know that I computed x years of y quality using some rickety model if I were trying to decide among treatments or between treatment and non-treatment. Gives a frame of reference. I like frames of reference. I was not at all satisfied with what was provided by my father's doctors. They were well off the mark in what little they offered.
