Canada government to fund Ballard BLD.TO R & D

OAKVILLE, Ontario, April 21 (Reuter) - The Canadian government said on Monday it would provide
C$8 million to Ballard Powers Systems Inc to fund Ballard's research and development of a hydrogen
fuel cell engine.

The federal industry, natural resources, environment and transport departments will participate in the
collaborative project to develop a fuel cell engine for automotive use.

The Department of Natural Resources said the total Canadian contribution to the project represents up
to C$10 million, with C$8 million provided by the government.

"This is a visionary Canadian technology which the federal government has helped support for many
years," Natural Resources Minister Anne McLellan said in a statement.

"This new research and development partnership will help take this breakthrough technology a step
further toward commercialization and the goal of achieving sustainable transportation in North
America," she added.

Ballard plans to work with Ford Motor Co to integrate the fuel cells into a car that Ford calls its P2000
advanced lightweight prototype vehicle.

Ford is a member of the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles - a joint initiative of the U.S.
government and the Big Three automakers to develop prototype cars which, by 2004, will be up to
three times as efficient as and will produce far lower emissions than today's vehicles.

Ballard launched the world's first fuel cell powered bus in Vancouver in early 1993 and the first
full-sized bus in 1995.
