hiding in plain sight, wasn't it? <g3>

i'm happy right now. just got off the phone with a dell tech. the old cd-rom drive's performance had deteriorated to somewhere between super sluggish and not working. i was bummed, but i knew dell would get me back on track. they always have.

we removed the cd-rom from device manager and rebooted to build a new driver. that didn't get it. we opened the case and unplugged the ide ribbon cable from the back of the cd drive and swapped the two on the motherboard. windows then couldn't find the E:drive (jaz drive) or F:drive (cd-rom), so we swapped the mobo cables back to the way they were. i threw a music cd in the drive and it worked okay. then i tried some software cd's and they popped right up on my desktop in a heartbeat (they had been taking forever to load).

so, with her help, all we did was unplug and reseat the ribbon cable on the drive, and i blasted it with compressed air while it was disconnected just so i'd feel like i did something! and everything is fine. <g3>

i should add that i'm 2 years and 11 months into a 3 year warranty, and she was all set so ship out a new cd-rom drive to me. i like dell a lot.

:)
