Sales generated by mainland China's semiconductor industry will account for 20 percent of the total worldwide IC revenue by 2007 to 2008, Japan's Nikkei Business Daily cited Morris Chang, chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), as saying.
Chang also said TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, would invest approximately US$1 billion in mainland China over the next four years and would increase the amount if necessary, the paper reported.
The chairman said TSMC's proposal to build a 200-millimeter wafer foundry in Shanghai was a first step for the company's planned move into mainland China, the paper reported.
Mainland China represents an important production base for semiconductor manufacturers, given the country's huge market and demands by customers for fast time-to-market, Chang said.
Chang added mainland China would replace South Korea and Taiwan as the major semiconductor production base for the 2000s.
South Korea and Taiwan were important production bases during the 90s, whereas Japan enjoyed a similar position during the 80s, he said. |
