I knew when I wrote that I risked making it seem dull. But I meant it reverentially. I didn't mean "arty," I meant it was "art" in the best sense, that is, it was the opposite of boring, its effects rose above those to be found in normal movie-making, imo, and achieved what literature does, when it rises to significant achievement.

Unless you don't 'get' the movie. Any item of art, or literature, moves some and doesn't move others.

This movie made me cry. I thought it was stunning and deep. A close friend of mine said, when I recommended it to her, that she'd seen it and it was "cute." Go figure. But Moulin Rouge is one of her favorite movies of all time. Go figure.
