Regeneron says "trap" arthritis therapy promising
STOCKHOLM, June 13 (Reuters) - U.S. biotech company Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (NasdaqNM:REGN - News) said on Thursday that its new "cytokine trap" therapy for rheumatoid arthritis had shown promise in early clinical trials.
Cytokine traps are a new category of drug candidates that trap molecules believed to play a role in the disease process, in this case interleukin-1.
Company researcher Dr Hans-Peter Guler told the European League Against Rheumatology congress in Stockholm that results of the first clinical trial showed that the therapy helped to relieve disease symptoms.
The six-week trial consisted of single and multiple dose treatment arms. The single dose arm consisted of 25 patients, while 82 patients participated in a multiple dose arm.
Compared with a placebo, patients treated with the interleukin-1 trap found that the number of tender and swollen joints decreased over the six weeks of therapy. At the same time, levels of a biochemical indicator of inflammation also decreased in their blood.
The treatment was well tolerated and the number of adverse events was the same as in the placebo group, Guler added.
"The results were better than we dared hope," he said in a statement. "Potentially this could be a very valuable new drug, in terms of having another agent available for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis."...
