re your "something rotten in Denmark". Your intuition is excellent, only your geography needs fine tuning. The following is excerpted from the 12-18-96 WSJ:

Japan: Chip Makers Join To Develop Low-Cost Microprocessor

TOKYO (AP-Dow Jones)--A group of computer chip makers from Japan, the U.S. and Europe have agreed to jointly develop new technology to upgrade computer microprocessors and cut the current price by half, a Japanese company official said Wednesday. END EXCERPT.

Imagine this scenario: The mm's are saying "S---! the fed meeting and talk of weak retail sales isn't getting us to the 120-125 level where we must be by Friday to maximize our profits." "Damn! we'll have to resort to an external threat story" "Hate using such extreme measures but you gotta do what you gotta do".

In all fairness the story did go on to name a half dozen Japanese companies along with SGS Thompson and Texas Instruments. However, the quoted source was an unnamed Japanese company official. The story also did not mention a target date or the fact that at present trends intc microprocessors would also be twice the performance at half the price in the not-too-distant future.

Best Regards
