The Illinois River is now infested with Bighead Carp which are filter feeders that reach 100 pounds. Things don't look good for the native fish as these invaders will eat what the newly hatched fish feed on.

Yes, well, it's pretty shocking how many invasive fish species there are now. Rather discouraging too. This summer, a kind of large exotic minnow was found up in one of the rivers where I do quite a bit of stuff -- the kind of minnow that grows quickly, is aggressive, and will eat young fish of other species. I just hate it when something like that turns up while doing species surveys. The same river is already full of Orconectes rusticus -- the aggressive invasive crayfish -- no doubt you've run into these as they've already gotten out of hand in many U.S. rivers.

Oh well, what can you do except look back on your memories of how things used to be in the Good Old Days.
