Old accounting rules recognized patents as expenses, allowing companies to write off titanic portions of fly-by-night mergers and acquisitions. Under the new rules, however, companies must rethink their strategies for acquiring technology. Kahn predicts a major decline in the number of acquisitions in the near future

I think the new rules make purchase mergers (the only kind there now is) more likely, not less. Previously there would be an automatic amortization charge for many years - now there is only a charge if the goodwill actually becomes impaired.
