Genuity to Trial Nortel Networks OPTera Connect HDX Connection Manager

------------------------------------------------------------
Solution Reduces Cost of Optical Services While Delivering Ease of
connectivity

BOSTON, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ - Genuity (NASDAQ: GENU) plans to conduct
what are expected to be the first customer trials of next generation, multi-
terabit, intelligent optical cross-connect switches using the OPTera Connect
HDX Connection Manager from Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT).
An ultra dense, massively scalable, intelligent optical service platform,
Nortel Networks OPTera Connect HDX Connection Manager is designed to reduce
the cost of switched optical services while simplifying and automating end-to-
end connectivity.
With capacity ranging from hundreds of gigabits per second to tens of
terabits per second, OPTera Connect HDX will expedite access to services such
as managed connectivity, Virtual Private Networking (VPN) and eBusiness
hosting.
Genuity plans to test the performance, interoperability and operational
simplicity of OPTera Connect HDX beginning in the first quarter of 2001.
"OPTera Connect HDX is the enabling platform that will allow Genuity to
manage the continued exponential growth of our network, as well as offer
dynamically managed bandwidth services," said John Booth, director, technology
assessment, Genuity. "Enabled with Intelligent Optical Connectivity, OPTera
Connect HDX will be the new industry benchmark customers have come to expect
with the Optical Internet."
Taking solutions from the sub-wavelength layer to the wavelength layer,
OPTera Connect HDX will allow seamless introduction of new technologies.
Designed to improve network efficiency and cost management, it will also
provide Intelligent Optical Connectivity using signaling and routing
capabilities based on the Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON)
standard. ASON is designed to enable open, end-to-end set-up and control of
sub-wavelength, wavelength or multi-wavelength optical connections.
"OPTera Connect HDX will permit flexibility when configuring network
restoration options, and enable delivery of new high-bandwidth optical
services which are key to customers who want faster time-to-market and
enhanced revenue opportunities within the high-performance Internet," said Don
Smith, president, Optical Internet, Nortel Networks. "With these trials,
Genuity will demonstrate its leadership in the eBusiness network space, and
its commitment to providing customers with the most advanced capabilities
available."
Nortel Networks will showcase OPTera Connect HDX at the National Fiber
Optic Engineers Conference, Aug. 28-30 in Denver.
