Seagate Latest to Adopt GMR Heads for 2.5-inch Hard Disk Drives

Seagate Technology will join industry leaders IBM, Toshiba
<TOKYO:6502>, Fujitsu <TOKYO:6702> and NEC <TOKYO:6701> in using GMR heads on 2.5-
inch hard disk drives. The California manufacturer will start
employing GMR on its 2.5-inch drives in January, 2000, and by the
end of the same year will have replaced MR with the higher-
density format completely in the 2.5-inch drive category. Able
to record at densities of 3-4 gigabits per square inch, GMR heads
are finding favor as a way to maintain storage levels at the same
time smaller products demand compact drives.
