Be sure not to send any deadwood:U.S. working with Canada on latest lumber woes: Schwab

Wed Oct 4, 2006

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and Canada are working to resolve issues that have delayed implementation of a lumber agreement that was supposed to have gone into force last Sunday, the top U.S. trade official said.

"We're working on it. We're in very close contact with the Canadian government," U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab told reporters on Wednesday after a speech.

The Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, an U.S. industry group, is angry that Washington and Ottawa agreed last week to a request by some Canadian producers to delay the launch of the recently concluded trade pact by up to a month.

It had been scheduled to start on October 1.

The lumber coalition has accused its Canadian rivals of delaying the pact's start so they can export more wood into an already weak American market.

"We want to get it done. The agreement's signed and we want to get it (implemented)," Schwab said.
