I am old enough to recall 1972 and what followed. The problem is, if I were a Republican presidential campaign strategist, I would have my people repeating Hillary's line on every news program and talk radio show in the country. The guidance would be to sneer, so what does this woman really stand for? What would she do? Is she capable of making a decision or just sticking her thumb in the wind to see which way the wind is blowing?

That is a nasty caricature but politics is full of nasty caricatures and worse. I see Hillary opening the door to getting knocked off her perch just like Kerry did.

Embracing or denying both sides of an issue frequently leads to an image that is just mush. Someone like McCain just has to stand up and say you know, I know where I stand on Iraq and I have known all along. Now here is my plan to conclude the campaign successfully.

That message will play in middle America. I don't think Hillary's will.
