Embracing or denying both sides of an issue frequently leads to an image that is just mush. Someone like McCain just has to stand up and say you know, I know where I stand on Iraq and I have known all along. Now here is my plan to conclude the campaign successfully.

That message will play in middle America. I don't think Hillary's will.

You underestimate Hillary. She is not a bimbo. She has been through this stuff before. In many ways she is better than Bill. In fact, I think she is better than Bill in almost every conceivable measure with the exception that Bill had this devil may care, slick willy charm. That is a big plus for Bill, but I think Hillary will just have to overcome that.

I am positive that her positions are not based purely on opportunism. My guess is that it is a careful balance between her deep rooted convictions and the realities of politics.

Anybody who is ever going to president will have to be able to understand and navigate through this.

I think Hillary can do it.

But, I agree with you, it will not be easy.

McCain has a natural constituency. All those fervantly pro-Bush will also vote for McCain.

McCain will have to fight for the center like anyone else. He is not a rocket scientist. A lot of people in the center are pretty smart. They are not going to give McCain a pass on intellectual grounds. They did with George W. Bush and a lot of them are going to remember.
