( BW)(IBM-SOFTWARE)(IBM) IBM INTRODUCES VOICETYPE CONNECTION
FOR NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR
People Can Surf the 'Net with Their Voice

IBM today announced the availability of a beta version of a new
speech recognition software product that lets people navigate the
Internet by talking. The product, called VoiceType(a) Connection NS
Edition, works with the 32-bit Windows(a) 95 version of Netscape
Navigator(a) 3.0 and is available as a free download from the
Internet.
"This is a significant step in bringing about much wider
acceptance of voice recognition software," said Jan Winston,
worldwide speech systems manager at IBM. "VoiceType Connection NS
allows people to easily explore and find their way through the unique
world of information found on the Internet using something that is
natural and familiar -- their voice."

"The announcement of this product brings a significant benefit to
the millions of Netscape Navigator users who now have the opportunity
to pair the world's most popular browser with IBM's VoiceType speech
technology," said Bob Lisbonne, vice president of client marketing
at Netscape. "We think the combination of speech recognition with
our browser demonstrates Netscape Navigator's ability to integrate
with leading-edge technologies."
With VoiceType Connection NS Edition, people will be able to use
their voice to control Netscape Navigator 3.0/3.01 to access web
sites, without speaking or typing an entire URL.
This allows them to
simply ask the computer to go to a site on the Internet and move
around within it by talking to the computer. Using IBM's text word
spotting technology, people can surf by speaking only a few of the
words in a hotlink -- creating voice-enabled shortcuts to their
favorite Web sites.
Netscape Navigator users will see a few changes
in the interface, but will not notice any significant differences,
with the addition of speech recognition.

People can also enjoy the benefit of direct dictation into
Netscape e-mail or web pages by adding any of IBM's dictation
products, like VoiceType Simply Speaking or the latest version of
VoiceType 3.0.

Voice Technology Innovation

Developed with the IBM VoiceType Developers Toolkit, VoiceType
Connection is a new concept using Object Code Insertion Techniques
(OCIT, patent-pending) to integrate IBM's award-winning VoiceType
speech recognition technology with popular software titles to make
them speech-aware. VoiceType Connection NS Edition is the first
application available, with others currently in development. Each
future edition will be fully compatible with other VoiceType
Connection editions as well as with the VoiceType family of products.
In the case of VoiceType Connection NS Edition, IBM used the Netscape
Client API (NCAPI) and OCIT to achieve seamless integration with
Netscape Navigator.

Availability/System Requirements

The beta version of VoiceType Connection NS Edition is currently
available as a download from the Internet at
software.ibm.com The
product works with Netscape Navigator 3.0/3.01 running on most
Pentium(a) computers available today, which are equipped with a
recommended microphone and an industry-standard sound card, such as
Sound Blaster(a), or IBM's Mwave(a) media processor. VoiceType
Connection NS Edition requires a 90 MHz Pentium-compatible PC running
Windows 95 with 11 MB additional hard disk space, L2 cache of 256 KB,
and a minimum of 5 MB of RAM above other RAM requirements.
