BT says multimedia service trial to end Aug
LONDON, June 25 (Reuters) - British Telecommunications Plc said on Friday testing of technology for multimedia services over ordinary domestic telephone wires would be finished by the end of the summer and that it would then make an announcement.

''The trial is underway and is due to be complete at the end of the summer...end of August, September,'' a BT spokesman said.

''We will be making an announcement after the end of the trial,'' he added.

The Financial Times reported earlier that BT was within weeks of launching the technology, called ADSL, which the group has been testing at a number of sites in west London since 1994.

The BT spokesman said the report was ''speculative.''

BT's hand has been forced by the readiness of cable television operators to install co-axial cabling to handle high speed multimedia transmissions.
