Digital Joins Gigabit Ethernet Party

Digital Equipment Corp. may be exiting the microprocessor business,
but the computer company reaffirmed its intention to compete in the
networking equipment business.

Digital is a latecomer to the Gigabit Ethernet party. Network
equipment veterans, such as 3Com Corp., Bay Networks Inc.,
Cabletron Systems Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. and newcomers, such
as Extreme Networks Inc., Foundry Networks Inc. and Prominet Corp.,
demonstrated prototypes and commercially available Gigabit Ethernet
gear at Networld+Interop.

Digital is taking orders for the GigaSwitch/Ethernet switch and
will deliver the product in large volumes in February 1998. The
company will bolster its Gigabit Ethernet product line with
adapter cards for servers and an uplink module to add Gigabit
Ethernet capabilities to existing switches, Woznicki said.
