I think there may be value in bashing Reid because Reid is an integral part of the Obama campaign and one that Obama cannot distance himself from. He's universally hated and well recognized as human slime.

A lot of people see the attack by Reid as an attack by Obama. Romney's surrogates responding are a way to call Obama a liar without having to attack directly.
