CDMA (Code Division Multple Access) is indeed a technology newer and better than TDMA and its cousin GSM. CDMAone is a name adopted by the CDMA Development Group to apply to the one version of CDMA. You may see this version of CDMA referred to as IS-95. Qualcomm does now own any version of CDMA, however they have many patents covering aspects of IS-95 compatible equipment such that currently it is virtually impossible for a manufacturer to make such equipment without obtaining a license and payong royalties. In addition, QCOM makes CDMA infrastructure, handsets and asics (application specific integrated circuits). The only digital phones that use Qualcomm asics are those using IS-95 cdma. I do not know the structure of the qcom royalty arrangements.
