Stockman:

Do you believe in Father XMas? The sub $1k PC is very well MMX equipped (CYRIX MediaGX200). If you remember, intel lost a suit against them (actually, there was an out-of-court settlement allowing CYRIX and AMD to use the phrase 'MMX' as well) when they claimed this was a copyright infringement.

There is no End of Life fire sale going on with sub $1k PCs anywhere - as a matter of fact they don't have enough to go around...

The whole trick is that, due to ASP being lower and intel having no competitive option to offer in this market segment they simply lost out on a huge market opportunity that CYRIX (mainly) and AMD (for some part) were able to gobble up just too willingly.

Now intel will have to drop their prices on P55 (MMX) and PII earlier than expected, but it will not hurt them that much in the long run as most consumers will only buy intel if the same features are offered significantly cheaper in a non-intel product, as was seen lately with the sub $1k Presario, for example ($799 with MediaGX 200 MHz).

Don't believe everything the die-hard intel folks (by the way I would count you to be one of them) tell you. This correction will not kill intel. It is just a reflection of the current market segment punishing intel for missing out on this opportunity.

Take care

Kai
