Walgreen Co. January Sales Increase 17.2 Percent
DEERFIELD, Ill., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Walgreen Co. (NYSE: WAG - news) had January sales of $2,375,900,000, an increase of 17.2 percent from $2,027,065,000 for the same month in 2001. Sales in comparable stores (those open at least a year) rose 10.7 percent.

January pharmacy sales increased 21.3 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales rose 16.0 percent.

Fiscal year-to-date sales for the five months were $11,733,298,000, up 16.3 percent from $10,089,945,000. Comparable store sales for the fiscal year to date increased 10.0 percent.

Comparable store front-end sales increased 3.6 percent during January.

Walgreens opened 42 stores during January including seven relocations, and closed three stores. At Jan. 31, the company operated 3,651 drugstores in 43 states and Puerto Rico, versus 3,313 a year ago.
