Russia has always been an enigma... until Gorbachev, for 30 years it had been a dual society... one side had the military industrial complex with a vast array of companies working under rules of serious western profit/loss balance sheets, competitive bidding, state of art science and technology (much stolen -- they have Apple standard), fledgling firm development, world class math/physics... to be a member of this MIcomplex was a certain good life with an apartment and if a manager, maybe a dacha... 75% of the country's best and brightest were directed to this world within Russia

their national sports complex was a mirror image of their MIcomplex... certainly used as a showcase political tool advertisement that offered a distorted view of life inside Mother Russia... a mother Russia whose identity was both murdered and usurped by the Soviets

the other half of their dual society involved the common man and woman struggling day to day in a severely underdeveloped economy... a peasant society with ox carts and manual farm labor... a society where a television cost six weeks paycheck, a car was a dream, privacy with the old lady on Saturday night was a dream, and fear the main watchword... yes alcoholism is still a problem with 40-50% of the population, only slightly worse than Maine and New Hampshire !!!

read CIA reports on former Soviet Union... most extreme economic dichotomy perhaps in the history of the world... commoners waiting in queues routinely for bread and basics... shared apts and bathroom facilities... mom-in-law job was to be a professional person waiting in lines half the day

Sputnik and Olympic Gold medals were a product of the Military Industrial Complex, the elite economy within the pre-industrial agrarian economy

anyone ignorant of either the universal black market of current Russia, or the upper class MIcomplex of Soviet Union should not share opinions, but instead read and continue learning
