here's a gold chart, back to late 60s, with scaling up to 5000. each bar represents about 3 months (quarterly).

this long-term view looks very constructive to me. price seems to just be slowly building a base preparatory to breaking through 1000. sure, it could dip back into the mid-800s again before the big rise; nevertheless, on a long-term basis this is a very nice-looking chart.
