U S West's !NTERPRISE Networking Deploys Ascend's IDSL.:
"Ascend Communications, the market-share leader in remote access and Internet access platforms, has been selected to provide the MAX family of products for IDSL CO equipment, as well as IDSL customer premises equipment. A technological innovation from Ascend, IDSL provides continuous 128 Kbps data access to the Internet or corporate LAN by interfacing directly to the !NTERPRISE Frame Relay backbone, thus bypassing the traditional voice network and eliminating busy signals. !NTERPRISE currently relies on the Ascend MAX platform to provide connectivity for business dial-up and dial frame users. The Ascend MAX family is the only line of equipment that provides CO
equipment for DSL and dial-up access services on the same platform."

!NTERPRISE's announce states that it's the first to offer a DSL portfolio. For the full story go to:

You will see in the story that the Ascend gear will interface with Cascade's 9000 platform and Newbridge's Mainstreet platform *already in use* providing 41,000 ports of service. So Ascend gets the hardware business required for these new IDSL services and would be in the running for the connectivity hardware business for the successor RADSL service when deployed.ed.

I think this supports the theory that Ascend has unusually prescient management and is extremely nimble on its feet, thus is highly likely to maintain its lead and continued success during 1997. they identified the possibilities of IDSL which apparently were overlooked by all else.

PairGain also is a significant winner and collaterally Cisco is as well but the latter's role is in supplying their Catalyst ethernet switch which acts as a concentrator for the PairGain CO-based HDSL modems. IMO that's a smaller piece of the jackpot than either Ascend's or PairGain's.
