There is very little information on the affects the Humpback songs have on other whales in the area which is why we we recording them.
Yes we can tell the difference between the songs, each has variations; and when they make a certain change in the song we could predict when they will surface.
We had two boats locating the singers . We were in radio contact with each other and within visual range as well.
We noted the surface behavior of all whales that came within a close range of the singers as well.
We did notice that when one male was singing sometimes a second male would bee-line for him and interrupt the song.
Often the singers were directly beneath the boat and we could hear their song quite clearly even without the hydraphone and recording monitors; sometimes seeing them hang under the water a they sang.
We also needed to make photographic ID's of the singers when they surfaced, and all other whales that entered the same region.
I will be back over there next winter to do more of this. It may take a few years to get any substantial data.
