The long perspective is welcome. Not that it excuses anyone, but Augustus Caesar, whose reign ushered in the best phase of the Roman Empire, was fascinated with pubescent girls and his wife (so the historians say) made arrangements for him to obtain mistresses who were 12-14 years old.

Also welcome is the gender differential in surveys. I imagine that in ancient times it was in fact the men that threw the stones, for the most part. Probably a collective way of expressing insecurity about their own ability to attract and keep women, and to "make an example" of the offender, of course. Also, to give the impression of righteousness.
