Atheism, IMO, is an assertion of humanism. Probably the greatest atheist was the greatest humanist, the Buddha. The creed, which indeed is shared by many religions, is universal compassion and the elimination of suffering IN THIS LIFE. The Buddha, who was against any religion, felt that metaphysical arguments were unsolvable, but that we should address our attention at eliminating suffering in this life.
. Hell, I'm getting a kick out of this thread--it's sort of like a amoeba in going in very different directions, but the directions are interesting.

Sam-- Sorry about George. I didn't even know about his son. We both know that his grandfather was the famed CCNY graduate who built the Panama Canal. George's untimely death points out that we all hang by a thin thread.
