I'm not sure if this will answer your question, but a related situation occured with a stock I owned on the AMEX. It was a fairly small software company that got de-listed because they ended up playing musical accountants and the whole company fell apart (they are now trading on the bulletin board). Anyway, the specialist was long many hundred of thousands of shares (I know from a source on the AMEX) and he really got burned because he believed in the company.

I think perhaps this also happens with market makers on the NASDAQ, but I'm no expert.

(As you can see, I'm not having great luck with these small cap stocks).
