Turks Delight Opponents
06 September, 2004 Eurosoc

Supporters of Turkish EU entry were left embarrassed this weekend when it emerged that 'moderately' Islamist leader Tayyip Erdogan plans to make adultery illegal in his country.

Western advocates of Turkey's accession have argued that Erdogan made the journey from fire-breathing Islamist to devout, but Euro-friendly statesman some time ago. Nevertheless, the premier has been under increasing pressure from Islamist party wing to prove that European aspirations will not mean the sacrifice of their version of Islamic culture.

The move has dismayed Turkey's feminists, media and opposition Republican People's Party, who plan to vote against the law. However Erdogan's Islamist AK has a comfortable majority in Turkey's parliament.

An earlier version of the law was kicked out several years ago on the basis that it would discriminate against women. This time, the Islamists are leaving nothing to chance, claiming that both guilty parties will be punished equally - with three year jail sentences.

The Guardian, with uncharacteristic understatement, reports that the proposals are likely to cloud Erdogan's meeting with EU enlargement commissioner, Günter Verheugen, scheduled for today.
