Compaq Keeps Questing

With the recent appointment of new leader Michael D. Capellas, Compaq
Computer Corp. is stepping up its quest for a finance chief. "They are
meeting candidates," says Bill Sur of Conboy, Sur & Associates. The New
York recruiter's efforts began in April, when Earl L. Mason, senior vice
president and chief financial officer, quit and the personal-computer maker
ousted CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer.

Compaq appears to want a CFO whose strong operational knowhow could
assist Mr. Capellas. The new leader has relatively little operating experience
at the company.

He briefly served as Compaq's acting chief operating officer before his July
promotion. He was hired as its chief information officer last year.

Mr. Capellas's selection as Compaq's president and chief executive gave the
CFO search "a different perspective," Mr. Sur explains.

Other recruiters believe Compaq has wooed Paul J. Liska, an executive
vice president and finance chief of insurer St. Paul Cos., plus Judith Sprieser,
who holds the same titles at Sara Lee Corp., the consumer-goods giant. "I'm
not going to Compaq," Mr. Liska says. Sara Lee declines to comment.
