I'm sure that preacher didn't intend to send coded messages. He probably believed everything he said. Maybe this country wasn't founded as a Christian nation, but it became one sometime in the 1830's or 1840's.
Gilmore is a good governor, you're lucky to get him. His plan to phase out taxes on cars helped propel him into office, didn't it? Republicans won both houses as well, a first in Virginia's electoral history I believe. He wouldn't have gotten there without help from people who think this is a Christian nation. Don't get upset if he throws them a bone. That speech is the only concession they're likely to get. It was a prayer breakfast, after all.
The Birchers are a little kooky, Christian Identity and their ilk are evil. I know the distinction between the two is lost on many. To question the role of the UN is not the same as railing against "mud people." Since when has criticism of the UN become out of bounds? I take your point, though. When some start down that road, it carries them into talk of the Bilderbergers, etc. But why care about that? Let them preoccupy themselves this way, what harm does it do? It is only to their own detriment that they carry on as they do.
I also don't get too exercised over the potential terrorist threat posed by known Christian Identity type groups. Do you recall the guy I told you about who, in the 60's and 70's would infiltrate neo-Nazi and Klan groups? He hasn't infiltrated himself in years, but he stays in touch with people who do. His bookshop is kind of a clearing house for intelligence and research material. He says the infiltration rate of known groups is 30-40% He told me this about 3 years ago. They're too busy trying to figure out who might be a snitch to actually carry anything out. No doubt damage could be done by a lone wolf or a foreign terrorist group.
Anyway, this started with who is left wing and who is right wing, didn't it? Obviously Birchers are on the right. Although eccentric, they shouldn't be shut out of debate. Christian Identity and their ilk are so beyond the pale I don't think we should expend much energy wondering if they are left or right. |
