It is a valid line of defense, though it shouldn't be used as an excuse for failure. There has to be a two-pronged approach. Expecting the schools to succeed when parents are completely uninvolved is unrealistic. We can't accept the complete apathy of parents toward education or we will fail.

Raspberry isn't whining; he has set about doing something in his own community to involve parents early. He's lucky to have a small community in which to work, and a famous name with which to sell his idea, but he is taking action and is to be commended for that.
