Earnings optimism fuels Corel stock gains
..."He's got to stop telling people what they're going to make in the quarter," the analyst said. "It's called a quiet period for a very, very good reason."

The consensus among analysts is that Corel will report approximately $67 million in revenue and show a profit of seven cents a share. Corel lost 24 cents per share in the previous first quarter, squelching hope for a repeat of the fourth quarter profit of 10 cents, which broke seven quarters of losses.

Retail investors may be more easily swayed by positive projections, added another analyst who asked not to be named, because they have less detailed information about a firm's financial performance.

"They are not the ones who are listening to the conference calls," he said. "Corel is completely abandoned by institutional investors by the way - it's strictly retail. It's the people who when they went to college used WordPerfect and Corel was this great company trading at C$23."

Retail owners do tend to persevere, the analyst added, holding stock in slumping firms long after institutional investors have walked away.
