Dave,

I too was worried about a CHPS like scenario for SIII, but as you know CHPS had a better pre-earnings run-up of $18 to $22 and then was crushed back to fill the $15 - 16 gap they had from last earnings anouncement after the cautious statements in their conf call.

So here we are with S3, with no real pre-earnings rally (unless you count the move to 19), with these market variables at play on monday:

1. EPS vs expectations
2. Conference Call spin items
- Strong demand for Virge +
- Notebook market wins? +
- Good outlook for 1st qtr? +
- Maybe S3 really will sell some sonic vibes/DVD or other stuff? +
- Fab costs behind them? +
- Cautious statments about competition and margin pressure -
- PC market outlook flat for 1st Qtr -
- 3D graphics eveolving rapidly with lots of risk -
- Some new "surprise" alliance, product, design win +

3. Market psychology and risk related to this stock's and sector's continued under performance.

So a .30+ eps surprise coupled with a real postive call could create a post earnings spike (followed by a retreat), that we had expected before earnings.

Or a .28 eps and a cautious conf call could leave this stock trading in the $16 to $19 range till 1Q.

But unless something spectacular happens by monday, we are not seeing the pattern we saw with SIII's 3rd qtr run-up and crash.

Thoughts?
