Diseases and invasive species spreading are the downside of globalization. We've had the West Nile but not too many people seem to come down with it here in DC metro area. I keep bees which is always iffy in a suburban area because people are afraid of them, but one neighbor is terrified that they will turn into Africanized Killer Bees. Problem is, she can't tell a bee from a wasp or a hornet. I think we are safe, though, because Killer Bees don't like cold weather, although they seem to be moving east. Then there are the snakehead fish which may be taking over the Potomac and environs. I just found out why there is so much kudzu in the South -- during the Great Depression the CCC paid farmers $8 an acre to plant it. Bad enough when we are invaded by accident, but worse when it's due to the government's "bright ideas." The Killer Bees are another "bright idea" that went bad, some government or university entomologist tried to hybridize them because they are more productive than ordinary honey bees and more disease resistant. I get enough bee stings as it is, don't even want to think about thousands all at once.
